What is community geothermal energy?

Community geothermal systems, also known as geothermal networks, connect water pipes underground between homes, schools, and other buildings in an entire neighborhood.

The consistent temperature of the ground heats and cools the water, and heat pumps in each building push the water where it is needed to heat or cool different buildings.

Community geothermal energy is clean, renewable, and doesn’t pollute like gas. It uses much less energy and is more efficient than other sources of energy.

It’s also safer! Pipes carry water (community geothermal system)  instead of high pressure and highly combustible methane (gas system).

What is the geothermal energy project at Northwest Park Apartments?

A community geothermal energy pilot project has been proposed at Northwest Park Apartments!

Note: This was the first project proposal, and it is subject to change based on feedback from the Public Service Commission and engineering analysis.

How will this project benefit me?

  • Switching to a geothermal network will benefit your health because you won’t be breathing contaminated air from your gas stove or your gas heater.

  • Your home will still be heated and cooled comfortably and gas appliances will be replaced with electric at no cost to you.

  • For those in the project area, the project will lower your utility costs in the long term because the energy will be more efficient.

  • The Warmth Act requires that the energy bills of participating households will not increase above what they would have been without the transition.

  • Healthier indoor air means healthier homes, lower medical costs, and missing fewer days of work to take sick children to school.
